Year 2 Writing Unit: Lost Species – Non-Chronological Report

Brand new for 2025 is this awesome writing unit for KS1, specifically Year 2.

This unit uses the fantastic non-fiction book Lost Species, by Jess French and Daniel Long, to support children in building up to writing non-chronological reports on extinct and imaginary animals.

Intended to be used over a period of four weeks, there are a variety of vocabulary, oracy and writing tasks designed to build the children’s knowledge, understanding and application of the elements of the KS1 writing curriculum.

The unit covers a range of National Curriculum writing objectives including:

  • Learn and use adjectives, verbs, adverbs and nouns
  • Use conjunctions (coordinating and subordinating)
  • Use the past tense correctly
  • Write the past tense correctly and in the progressive form
  • Use time verbs to indicate time
  • Write for different purposes
  • Write about real events
  • Plan what they are going to write about
  • Re-read writing to check it makes sense
  • Edit and improve work
  • Read aloud with appropriate intonation to make meaning clear
