UKS2 Writing Unit: Mortal Engines – Narrative
Brand new for 2024/25 is this awesome writing unit for UKS2.
This unit uses the fantastic book (and movie clips from) Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve as a hook and WAGOLL (what a good one looks like).
Designed to be used over a period of three weeks, there are a range of daily vocabulary, grammar and writing tasks, building up to a final outcome of writing a new narrative describing the capture of a small mining town by the traction city London!
The unit covers a range of National Curriculum writing objectives including:
- Effective use of verbs and adjectives
- Use of similes and metaphors
- Accurate punctuation of speech
- Using relative clauses
- Use of conjunctions to extend sentences
- Using colons and semi-colons
There are daily writing opportunities, oracy sections to encourage sharing and discussion, exploration of WAGOLL examples, hot-seating activities, daily feedback slides and time to plan, write and edit written work.
