Year 2 Writing Unit: The Journey Home - Poster and Letter

Brand new for 2025 is this awesome writing unit for KS1, specifically Year 2.

This unit uses the fantastic book The Journey Home by Frann Preston-Gannon to support children in building up to creating a poster and writing a letter on an environmental issue that is important to them and links with the experiences of one of the animals featured in the book.

Intended to be used over a period of three weeks, there are a variety of vocabulary, oracy and writing tasks designed to build the children’s knowledge, understanding and application of the elements of the KS1 writing curriculum.

The unit covers a range of National Curriculum writing objectives including:

• Use the past and present tense correctly
• Use expanded noun phrase
• Use co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions
• Use punctuation correctly: question marks and exclamation marks
• Write sentences with different forms
• Write for different purposes
• Re-read writing
• Edit and improve work
• Read aloud with appropriate intonation to make meaning clear
